Lifestyle Factors That Affect Your Skin

After a stressful and incredibly busy stretch of time last year trying to balance a full-time job with two businesses, I realized I was neglecting my body and my health. When I quit my job to pursue entrepreneurship full-time, I made it a goal to prioritize my well-being. One of my big goals for 2019 has been to take a holistic approach to how I look at my health and to focus on root causes instead of just the symptoms. This process of thought also applies to skincare as there are so many lifestyle factors that impact your skin!

PERSONALIZED SKINCARE

Skinsei: Skincare Factors That Affect Skin, Personalized Skincare

Skinsei takes these lifestyle factors into account and offers a personalized skincare regimen that is unique to you. They are all about having a holistic approach to skincare that takes into account who you are and how you live your life.

You start by taking a quick and easy diagnostic test and receive a customized set of skincare products tailored to your lifestyle, based on where you live, what you eat, how long you sleep and more.

I live in a large city, am prone to acne and have a high-stress work environment so the products in my regimen are geared towards that. They contain prebiotics to assist my microbiome and plant extracts to clarify and calm my skin. Curious about the factors that affect your skin? Here are some lifestyle factors that make an impact:

FACTOR THAT IMPACTS SKIN: UV

Sun protection has been a hot topic these past few years so I’m sure you’ve already heard the importance of protecting your skin from harmful UV rays plenty of times. UV rays can damage the skin cells, resulting in premature aging and wrinkles. How much time you spend outside plays a role in your UV exposure whether you spend your days outside or just spend time outside during your daily commute.

FACTOR THAT IMPACTS SKIN: EXERCISE

Regular exercise increases blood flow and gives your skin an incredible glow. Blood cells help carry oxygen and nutrients to the skin cells, making sure they get what they need. Needless to say, exercise plays a role in the skincare puzzle!

FACTOR THAT IMPACTS SKIN: CLIMATE + AIR QUALITY

Climate and air quality both play a big factor in your skin as well. For example, colder climates usually mean lower humidity, which can strip the skin of moisture and make it more prone to drying out. Poor air quality can irritate the skin and lead to premature aging. As I live in a dense, bustling city like New York City, we tend to have more air pollution which throws the skin’s microbiome out of balance.

FACTOR THAT IMPACTS SKIN: DIET

You know how the saying goes – you are what you eat! Your diet most definitely plays a role in the state of your skin. Eating foods that have healthy oils and antioxidant rich nutrients can improve the appearance of the skin. Conversely, certain foods that are high in processed sugar can worsen acne. For me personally, I’ve noticed that my skin is less prone to breakouts when I avoid dairy and processed foods. Whenever I eat cheese, I break out the next day, haha. THE WORST.

FACTOR THAT IMPACTS SKIN: SLEEP + STRESS

How many hours you sleep a night and the stressfulness of your work environment can affect your skin. I learned recently that New Yorkers spend an average of 9-12 hours a day with a digital device and I’m definitely guilty of that. NYC is a fast-paced, always-hustling type of environment and I’ll admit I have a hard time disconnecting and spend too much time on my phone or laptop.
